Teachers of mathematics have the important job of creating impactful experiences in the classroom where students have opportunities to notice, wonder, and discover. Mathematical tools and models can be helpful not only for problem solving, but also powerful for developing conceptual understandings. Number lines are a flexible tool that can be used from Kindergarten to Grade 2 as students deepen understandings of whole numbers. Participants will engage in activities using the number line to make connections and build number relationships. Some of the activities include clothesline math, walking number line, and beaded number line. These activities will support students’ ability to estimate, operate, and reason about numbers.
